Waterfront tanks

CORNWALL, Ontario - Three major players will meet Jan. 14 to try and resolve a controversy surrounding the construction of chemical tanks on Cornwall's waterfront.

MP Guy Lauzon confirmed the city, Trillium Distribution and Doug Smith, Transport Canada Minister Lisa Raitt's chief of staff, will meet to hash out details about the future of the project.

Mayor Bob Kilger told Seaway News the meeting will take place Jan. 14, one day after council meets for a regular session.

"All parties recognize we have a lot more work to do on the communication side," said Kilger. "The city has been trying to have (Trillium) come to Cornwall to look at different alternatives for his business and tanks."

Lauzon said he's hopeful a solution can be found to the controversy.

"We have concerns with all this going on down there," he said. "And I'm sure Trillium has concerns.

"We want a long-term solution."

But Lauzon has indicated in the past that it might be difficult, if not impossible, to stop construction.

The meeting though, may do little to assuage public concerns.

Mark MacDonald, a former city councillor who is rumoured to be running for mayor in next year's municipal election, said in a letter circulated among local media that Lauzon is not following the direction set out by constituents.

"There was only one solution that he was instructed to bring to the minister and that is, 'Stop now and break the lease,'" MacDonald wrote. "A duly recognized meeting of community leaders made that message loud and clear, and it was a unanimous vote.

"Maybe we didn't say it loud enough or maybe he wasn't listening."
