CORNWALL, Ontario – The key to security is locking your doors, according to police.

Cornwall police confirmed 5.5 per cent of vehicles checked throughout the Ontario-wide 'Lock it or Lose it' campaign were left unsecured.

In December 2013, Cornwall police attended local shopping malls to keep drivers from becoming a thief's easy target.

Residents were warned to 'Lock it or Lose it' during the holiday season, to ensure their vehicles and Christmas gifts stayed safe.

Judging by the results, drivers were listening.

Of 597 vehicles checked, police confirmed 33 were left unsecured or with valuables in plain sight.

One vehicle was even found unlocked, unattended, with the key in the ignition and the motor running.

Vehicle owners who didn't lock it were greeted with an educational pamphlet on their windshield.
