CORNWALL, Ontario - When parents separate, access with children may be a problem.
Sometimes, difficulties arise at the time of the exchange of the child between the parents, or between the parent and a relative, such as a grandparent. Other times, there may be concerns about the visits themselves. Centre York Centre Supervised Access Centre offers families experiencing difficulties a way to deal with some of these problems.
Providing a safe and secure setting where visits and exchanges can take place under the supervision of trained staff and volunteers, the Centre York Centre defends every childâs right to have access to parents and other family members without witnessing conflicts between parties.
âOur primary focus is the children,â says Farhana Meghji, co-ordinator for the Cornwall site. âWe help to ease the tensions of access arrangements for children by offering a neutral and non-threatening environment, and ensuring the safety of all persons involved. Itâs a place where children are cherished.â
A non-profit organization funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General, the centreâs client-base has grown exponentially over the last 10 years.
âWe rely heavily on the support of volunteers. We are incredibly lucky to have some very caring and dedicated volunteers currently on board, but there is a growing need to expand our roster,â Meghji said. âWe are currently seeking individuals to assist with clerical work, as well as supervision for visits and exchanges.â
Thanks to the hard work and commitment of staff and volunteers thus far, Centre York Centre happily celebrated 20 years of Supervised Access Services in 2012. The centre currently features two sites - one in Cornwall and another in Hawkesbury.
Most recently, the Centre in Cornwall moved to a lovely new location at 20 Montreal Road. This new site boasts a warm, inviting environment with added space and a fresh layout to serve clients better. The centre will be hosting an open house on Feb. 10 from 3 to 7 p.m., inviting both professionals and the general public to visit their new location and learn more about their services and volunteer opportunities.
Everyone is welcome. Please contact Meghji at 613-933-1253 for more information.
