CORNWALL, Ontario – Waterfest is scaling back to just one day this year.

Cindy Rowe, executive director at the Heart and Stroke Foundation which sponsors the event, said Thursday the popular Cornwall Canal event will run Aug. 9.

In 2013 the event ran for two days but Rowe said the plan this year is to focus on three core events, including dragon boat races, a strongman competition and an art show.

The dragon boat races will include community and competitive divisions with teams coming on from Ottawa, Kingston and other regions. Rowe is hoping for 20 teams this year.

“We’ve seen people come from a wide area, because of dragon boat clubs in other communities,” said Rowe. “They love our canal…because as they’re racing they can hear the people from the shore cheering.”

Rowe said a dragon boat club is being established in Cornwall via a partnership with the local sea cadets.

The event will seek in-kind services from the city in 2014.
