Outpatients at hospital will now wait in a 'virtual line'

CORNWALL,  Ontario - A growing list of outpatients at the Cornwall Community Hospital's McConnell site have a new way of registering for procedures.

Hospital officials said Wednesday a new electronic numbered queuing system has been installed at the main entrance (on the south side) of the McConnell Street site.

When arriving for any outpatient procedure, patients will see a touch screen where they are issued a ticket and in turn placed in a virtual line. This allows the patient to have a seat, knowing that their number is in the queue to be called.

Once seated, the patient will see the number displayed on the screen located in the waiting area.

It displays the ticket number, along with the desk number they should go to. This is alleviating the line up in the front entrance and allowing more of a comfortable wait for patients.

“A line up in front of you can be daunting, this numbering process is beneficial for both the patient and the registration staff,” said Shelley McLeod, manager of the department. When the registration staff is ready, each have a button to press at their station that cues the next number on the screen.

With the transfer of nuclear medicine to the McConnell site, there are more than 2,000 outpatient patients per month coming in through the main entrance.

This improvement to the process is creating a better flow, allowing a more comfortable wait for patients, and access to doors and necessary surrounding amenities, such as the auxiliary gift shop, parking ticket machine and bank machine.
