CORNWALL, Ontario - A group led by an Akwesasne man is planning to enter the abandoned border checkpoint on Cornwall Island this Saturday, which could lead to traffic disruptions, says a statement from the tribe.

Travel on the new low-level bridge to Cornwall Island may be disrupted this weekend.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) released a statement Thursday suggesting a group of community members plans to "take ownership" of the Canada Border Services Agency's (CBSA) defunct port of entry building on Cornwall Island (Kawehno:ke) on March 22.

MCA has activated its emergency measures program in response to the plan, and is advising its residents to prepare for possible traffic disruptions.

The MCA said in an article published in the Two Row Times out of Six Nations, Stacey Boots made public claims that suggest he and his group are prepared to enter the facility that used to be home to the Canada Border Services Agency. MCA also indicated Boots made similar claims via Facebook.

MCA said it tried to meet with Boots about his plan, but he cancelled at the last minute.

The Federal Bridge Corporation has a policy to shutter bridge traffic, if there is the possibility of danger to travelling public.

Wade Dorland, Seaway International Bridge Corporation (SIBC) interim general manager, said his organization is fully aware of the potential disruption and heaped praise on the MCA and its Emergency Measures Program for keeping them updated.

"Right now the corporation is following the situation," said Dorland. "We have no plans to shut down the bridge."

SIBC is waiting for Saturday before they announce a potential closure.

When contacted by Seaway News, Cornwall police Constable Dan Cloutier was unaware of any plans to close the bridge on Saturday.

"If specific delays become known the Cornwall police will forward information to local media outlets for broadcast," said Cloutier.

All people care about is the disruption to their materialistic lives. Now our own band criminalizes us. They sold us out quite some time ago or CBSA wouldn't get away with what they do. I say close the bridge permanently, "no more Cornwall, get over it". CBSA would be layed off and within a month Cornwall would begin to die economically and beg us to reopen passage on our terms.

I'm so sick of the stereotyping and ignorance. I live on Cornwall Island and I do not support any of the shenanigans that these small groups of people do to cause border crossing disruptions. Quit generalizing and talking about us all as if we're all in support of the bulls--t because not all of us agree with it.

If they want to play stupid games close the bridge its that simple always crying about something .What do they want now they got a new bridge that is working and saving travelers time ..Had they not pulled the stupid stunts in the past Canadian customs would still be there and they wouldn't have to report into Cornwall ..Love how it has put a almost stop to the smuggling now that its on Cornwall and they have to pass throw it now when they didn't in the past .Thanks for all the stupidity in the past to bite yourself in the ass lol

This is basically one man saying he'd do this, not the community of Akwesasne. Personally I don't believe one persons actions should reflect on the entire reservation. I don't know how you think it "put a almost stop to smuggling" when half of it comes from Cornwall residents too. PS - CBSA abandoned their post because of peaceful protest. Seeing as they like to detain innocent residents and hold them as hostage and threaten them,(skidders case) I'm glad we protested to keep guns out of their hands.

It was the stupidity of CBSA and the government that caused this whole fiasco, by not consulting with the people most effected by the arming of the officers.. The broke the law by not consulting, as required by Canadian federal law..

So I guess the natives never done nothing for the guards to want the guns did they would you sit in a building why others are taking shots at you with guns ? don't think so remember for every action their is a counter reaction so stop the idiotic stuff and then people wont feel the way they do .Maybe the good natives in the community need to stand up to the thugs that are causing the problems making others feel like your all the same but then if they did they would be run of there land and chastised for doing it so cant blame them for sitting ideal why the idiots do the dirties they do ..
