Long Sault man charged with fentanyl trafficking arrested again

CORNWALL, Ontario – Two weeks after being arrested for serious drug offences, a 43-year-old Long Sault man is back behind bars after allegedly attempting to rob a Cornwall man in his home for the same drug that led to his arrest in the first place.

City cops allege Frederico Belmonte entered an unlocked Carleton Street residence and demanded that the homeowner turn over his prescription medicine on Monday, March 10.

Police say after a brief struggle, the man allegedly fled with a quantity of fentanyl.

During their investigation, members of the Cornwall Street Crime Unit and the O.P.P. executed a warrant at the man’s Long Sault residence on Thursday, March 20 and found he was in possession of a crossbow and drugs, despite being on conditions not to. The search turned up a small quantity of marijuana, Percocet, and Oxycodones.

The man is charged with robbery, break and enter, possession of controlled substances, and a breach of recognizance for being in the possession of a crossbow and controlled substances.

He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.

Belmonte was arrested on March 6 by members of the Cornwall Street Crime Unit and Ontario Provincial Drug Enforcement Team during a traffic stop on Highway 401, near the Church Street overpass.

Police allege he was in possession of $11,137.50 worth of fentanyl, in various strengths.

Belmonte was charged with possession of fentanyl and possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking.
