CORNWALL, Ontario - Your Arts Council - Cornwall and the Counties (YAC) held its first ever annual general meeting on Monday night, at Aultsville Theatre, with approximately 30 local artists of various disciplines in attendance.

“It’s been an interesting ride,” said Betty Healey, board chair, of the first 18 months since the inception of the not-for-profit group, whose mission is to  “work with strategic partnerships, to connect resources and create opportunities for continuous improvement and mutual financial sustainability, within the  arts and culture sector and the region.”

Healey says that YAC, having been funded by the Ontario Trillium foundation, under the mentorship of the Community Futures and Development Corporation (CFDC), is ready to move forward independently, as of the first of April.

“We are well placed to move forward and very excited about the possibilities,” she said, adding that their board of directors represents the community very well, in all aspects of the arts, including dance, writing, theatre, visual artists, and music, from Cornwall and across the three counties.

The thing that we hope that Your Arts Council can really do is give the art and culture community a “leg up. Our dream and intent is that artists are  successful.”

Healey said that one of the key aspects is to work with strategic partners to connect resources and create opportunities within the arts and culture sector.

“What we want to do is to build a sustainable arts and culture community.”

“Our intent is that artists are successful, self-sustained, and have the opportunity to be known locally nationally and internationally.”

She said the council will strive to provide artists access to the necessary knowledge, tools, resources and information they require to have both artistic and business success.

“We want artists to be acknowledged, celebrated and recognized as vital and important contributors.”

To become a member of YAC, visit The $25 fee will provide discounts on courses hosted by the council, such as the recent social media, as well as coaching and mentoring, from members of the board and access to the website for any event advertising.

Also in the works is the development of a community activities calendar for posting events.
