2013 Raisin River Canoe Race
CORNWALL, Ontario - The annual Raisin River Canoe Race, like everything else in this muted beginning to spring, has been postponed.
Officials said Tuesday the race will now take place April 27 - a delay of two weeks.
Lissa Deslandes, the organizer of the race, said a meeting of the event's safety committee resulted in a unanimous decision to postpone things.
"Even if the river opens a couple of days before the first date, it would be too fast and furious," she said. "We'd rather be on the safe side."
The race has been plagued with an unco-operative Mother Nature in recent years, with warmer than normal springs that have resulted in flat river conditions.
Deslandes said this year organizers can't even set up race infrastructure on the sidelines.
"I visited the portage area in Martintown, and there's a 12-foot snowbank where we usually set up," she said, adding refunds are available for those who cannot make it on the new date.
