CORNWALL, Ontario – Dr. Robin Poole, a world-renowned arthritis researcher will be appearing at the Cornwall Public Library April 23 as part of the St. Lawrence River Institute’s Science and Nature Speakers Series.

The South Glengarry resident first began is research in Cambridge, England. His discoveries there on cancer led him to uncover clues surrounding the mysteries of arthritis.

The successful work in England led to an invitation to move to Canada to start a new Joint Diseases Laboratory at the Shiners Hospital for Children in Montreal.

“He’s one of two scientists in the world that is an expert on arthritis,” said River Institute communications officer Karen Cooper. “He’s worked all over the place but lives right here.”

Poole accepted and supervised the planning and construction of the lab, eventually becoming Director in 1977. Since then, his studies have focused on cartilage fusion, immunity to cartilage antigens, the development of biomarkers to detect arthritic diseases, as well as their progression and treatment.

“We’ve never done a medical research talk before,” said Cooper. “We usually talk about water or wildlife but we thought that there were lots of scientists who work on medical and it just so happened we have one right here.”

Dr. Poole has been heavily involved with the community as well, being the Cooper Marsh Boardwalk Fundraising chair, helping raise $300,000.

While there still is no single cure to this crippling disease, Poole’s studies have led to better chances for positive outcomes.

Over 4.6 million Canadian adults have been reported having arthritis. Two out of three affected by the disease are women.

“Guests will learn a lot about the disease,” said Cooper. “He’s going to be talking in general to the public about what their concerns are and about his research. He knows quite a bit.”

Space is limited at the library and half the spots have been filled. If you would like to reserve a spot for yourself call (613) 936-6620 or e-mail kcooper@riverinstitute.ca.
