CORNWALL, Ontario - City councillors are calling on medical professionals in Cornwall to attend a May council meeting where hospital officials are expected to explain a decision that consolidates a department and results in job losses.
Councillors agreed Monday night doctors, surgeons and the medical officer of health should attend the May 26 meeting where Cornwall Community Hospital managers will appear to explain their rationale for consolidating the pathology department with a larger regional network.
The move will result in as many as four positions being eliminated and there are concerns the move could extend the time patients, including those with cancer, will wait for test results, said Coun. Andre Rivette.
Rivette has been the loudest critic of the move, going as far as suggesting when groups like the city and others pledged funds for the facility, it was not to see cuts take place.
"We're just sending an invitation out," he said. "It's to let us know whether or not there are concerns. These are the people who know whether or not there are concerns."
