CORNWALL, Ontario - The following statement has been issued by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) regarding the proposed land settlement between the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, New York State, and St. Lawrence County.
From left are Tony Arquiett, Legislator Representing District 13, Jonathan Putney, Chairman of St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators Representing District 15, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Tribal Chief Ron LaFrance Jr., Tribal Chief Beverly Cook, Tribal Sub-Chief Eric Thompson and Tribal Sub-Chief Michael Conners.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is supportive of the steps taken by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe this week to move the Akwesasne community’s New York State land claim closer to finalization. It is a land claim that has spanned three decades and the MOU signing is a major step in the direction of progress.
We wish to emphasize to community members that the settlement itself has not been finalized and still requires state and county approvals. More information regarding this land claim and MOU signing is available on the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s website at www.srmt-nsn.gov.
