CORNWALL, Ontario – A collection of residents from a Cornwall apartment complex are hailing a Cornwall police officer as a hero for stopping the spread of a dangerous fire last month.
The residents were unsure of the identity of the officer who quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher from his patrol car and doused some of the flames that had begun burning at 600 Glengarry Blvd on May 19.
Turns out the officer in question is Const. Justin Wheeler, and Cornwall police chief Dan Parkinson couldn’t be happier with his work.
“Justin did what we would have expected of him,” said Parkinson. “Not only is he an excellent police offer, but also to work as a firefighter sometimes.
“It’s a judgment call. It always is when you’re dealing with fire.”
The residents of the apartment complex sent Parkinson a message, detailing their gratitude for the officer they consider an “angel.”

Chief Parkinson,
During the week of May 19, 2014 we experienced a fire at our 70 unit building located at 600 Glengarry Boulevard.
Unfortunately, we do not know the officer’s name, but we wish to advise you that due to his quick and astute action he prevented this building from becoming ablaze. As a tenant was calling 911, this fine officer was driving by our building and immediately noticed this plume of smoke. In a matter of seconds, your officer was using the extinguisher from his police vehicle.
A few moments later the fire department then arrived and the fire was now under control.
Chief Parkinson, since we do not know this fine officer’s name, we shall refer to him as our “Angel” officer. If you could relay this message to the responding officer, it would be greatly appreciated. His actions did not go unnoticed. We are extremely grateful.
