CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall Transit will be opening its bus doors and offering free rides all day long on Wednesday, June 4th in celebration of Clean Air Day.

The free ride promotion for Clean Air Day was first initiated in 2007 and it has continued to grow in popularity with each passing year. Last year, a total of 5,814 passengers boarded buses on Clean Air Day, much to the delight of Cornwall Transit officials. By comparison, the average daily ridership for the three previous workdays was 2,806.

“The goal of the promotion is to get more people on our buses to experience the benefits of using public transit,” said Len Tapp, Transit Manager. “We think people will be impressed with the convenient and efficient service we offer.”

As part of the promotion, a series of ‘mystery riders’ will be handing out prizes to riders on the buses throughout the day.

The Clean Air Day event is also being held in conjunction with the national Commuter Challenge.

From June 1st to June 7th, residents are encouraged to leave their cars at home and take advantage of the environmental and health benefits of alternative modes of transportation all while competing against other cities across Canada.

The challenge rewards participants for using active and alternative modes of transportation like walking, cycling, rollerblading, carpooling or using public transit. Once registered, participants are asked to log each sustainable commute made during the week – be it for work or leisure purposes.

Participants who complete a minimum of three commutes during the week will be eligible to win some great prizes.

To date, 13 Cornwall workplaces and more than 100 individuals have registered to participate in the Commuter Challenge.

For more information and details on registering, please visit www.Cornwall.ca and look for the Commuter Challenge link near the bottom of the home page.
