Kim Kelly, left, a cyclist travelling to PEI to help raise money and awareness for cancer research, is joined by Winmar Cornwall's Caroline O'Reilly.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A 50-year-old mom from southern Ontario is cycling east to Prince Edward Island in hopes of raising money and awareness for cancer research.

Kim Kelly spent Thursday night in Cornwall, and said in an interview Friday morning her journey has been both physical and emotional.

"There's so many people I know and love affected by cancer," she said.

Kelly left her Burlington, Ont. home June 1 and plans to arrive in Prince Edward Island on or about June 23.

The cycling trek will take her through southern Quebec and the Maritimes before arriving at her destination.

Despite the arduous conditions and a solid day of rain before arriving in the Seaway City, Kelly has been inspired by messages of support.

"I get texts and Facebook messages from people I know and that has really helped me," she said.

Winmar has been Kelly's "unofficial, official" sponsor. The media event in Cornwall took place at the local Winmar office on Second Street East.

She can be followed online here.
