CORNWALL, Ontario – City councillors want to know why it takes so long for building permits to be issued in Cornwall.
Councillors are seeking a report from the building services department to address a tidal wave of complaints from frustrated residents who are being forced to wait days and weeks for permits.
“I receive numerous phone calls with complaints regarding our process and how long it takes to get a building permit,” said Coun. Maurice Dupelle. “We need to understand why it takes so long.”
Coun. Denis Thibault, while in favour of the move, suggested a reason for the delays.
“We added a big burden of work to administration as a result of the all the flooding we have had in the city,” he said, adding a new program to help offset the costs of retrofitting flood-prone homes has created a deluge of response from residents. “I know very well as result of the issues we are having with the floods…the workload has dramatically changed.”
The report on the building permit delays will return to councillors at a future council meeting.
