HOW SWEET IT IS: Strawberry season kicks off in SDG
Strawberry season is beginning across the five counties of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry and Prescott-Russell.

CORNWALL, Ontario – ‘Tis the season for strawberries in Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry – and what better way to kick it off than with free strawberry-themed desserts?

Fresh strawberries will be available beginning mid-June at several local berry farms and farmer’s markets in SDG and Prescott-Russell (PR).

The start of strawberry season and the launch of the Eastern Ontario Agri-Food Network’s 2014-2015 SDG&PR Farm Fresh Local Food Map will be celebrated at Avonmore Berry Farm (16365 Fourth Road, Avonmore) on Saturday, June 21, from 1 – 3 p.m.

The Agri-Food Network and Avonmore Berry Farm invites everyone to come and taste the first berries of the season, and pick up a free copy of the local food map to help promote local farm fresh products.

Complimentary strawberry shortcakes and homemade ice cream will be served with fresh berries.

QUICK FACTS

Over 600 varieties of strawberries are grown worldwide each year, but in Ontario, the ‘ever-bearing’ variety continues to gain in popularity.

Ever-bearing plants flourish later in the season, generally from July through October, and extend strawberry season significantly.

Strawberries provide a great health boost, boasting high levels of antioxidants, vitamin C, and folic acid.
