The Lambert Spirit was docked at the Cornwall Harbour earlier this year to deliver calcium chloride to a pair of tanks.

CORNWALL, Ontario - City councillors are expected to put the rubber stamp to agreement between the municipality and Akwesasne to acquire waterfront land in Cornwall.

Officials from the first nation and Cornwall have completed an agreement and are prepared to sign documents that would allow both groups to jointly apply to the federal government's Transport Canada Port Divestiture Program.

The ultimate goal of both communities is to acquire waterfront lands that have become the new home to a pair of controversial chemical tanks.

City council must put its seal of approval on the agreement, and authorize Mayor Bob Kilger and clerk Helen Finn to sign all documents related to the agreement with Akwesasne.

Council is meeting Monday night and will consider the move.

Next will be to officially petition the federal government to acquire the waterfront land.

More to come.
