Cornwall Waterfest, which includes dragonboat races, will be held later this summer.
CORNWALL, Ontario - It promises to be a wet and wild weekend in August when Cornwall Waterfest takes to Lock 19 in the old Cornwall Canal.
Teams are still being sought for the popular summertime festival, which will include dragonboat races, live entertainment, vendors and an art show. Waterfest takes place Aug. 9.
"We're at about 16 to 18 teams right now," said Cindy Rowe, executive director of the local Heart and Stroke Foundation office, which sponsors Waterfest. "But a lot of those potential teams - we have verbal agreements from them."
Ultimately Waterfest organizers would like to see 20 teams competing in the event that sees teams rocket down the canal, poered only by the sweta and grunting of teams of rowers.
In the past even seniors teams have taken part in the races.
Rowe said those interested in practising with their team can call the Heart and Stroke office (613-938-8933) and set up a time to use an actual dragonboat.
"We've entered into a partnership with the local sea cadets," said Rowe. "The dragonboat is available for practising at their (location) south of the Lost Villages Museum."
The ocation is the former Boy Scout campaground on County Road 2.
