THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE: Walk the Seaway International Bridge today, hopefully

CORNWALL, Ontario – An open house set for today at the Seaway International Bridge is expected to bring with it a flood of people looking to traverse its vast expanse – and maybe a torrent of rain as well.

A ‘bridge open house’ takes place today from 2 to 8 p.m., but Mother Nature has plans of her own, which include the threat of thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening.

Environment Canada has already issued a thunderstorm watch, which could be upgraded to a warning later today.

A rain date has been scheduled for Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. – but there is no word on how the event will be impacted if the rain should occur after the open house has begun.

Cornwall information officer Kevin Lajoie said he has been in touch with organizers who are still planning to go ahead with the event – but are also monitoring weather conditions.

The pedestrian-only event is free, wheelchair accessible and open to the public.

Community members are invited to walk the bridge and view the historical photos that will be set up on the bridge for the occasion.

The special community event is also set to feature a brief commentary on the history of the old bridge, its replacement with the new North Channel Bridge and the planned demolition.
