CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall’s local Sea Cadet Corps (110 Stormont) invites teens to a lifetime of adventures at their free barbecue and open house on Monday, September 8.

Join them at the Cornwall Armoury (505 Fourth Street East) to celebrate their first official parade of the 2014 training year at 6:30 p.m.

The sea cadets are in recruiting mode, so tours of the facility as well as displays and presentations highlighting program activities will be available.

“This event is a great opportunity for all those interested in the program either as future cadets, volunteers or supporters to witness first-hand the program’s positive impact on the community and the valuable skills that are taught to cadets across Canada,” said Lt (N) Chris Cochrane.

There are currently 60 cadets in the Stormont group, many of which are from Cornwall, as well as Ingleside, Bonville, Lancaster, and Martintown. The free organization, which even supplies uniforms, offers programs aimed at youths 12 to 18.

“There’s an ocean of opportunities, but it’s up to them to take advantage,” he said. “We teach youth leadership skills, responsibility and a sense of team. Some kids really connect to it.”

In the last year, one cadet had lunch with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and another carried the Ontario flag on Parliament Hill in British Columbia.

Cadets will be sharing their stories from sea cadet camp at the open house, which took place this summer in Kingston for six weeks.

For over 60 years, the cadets have been serving the community’s youth. Cochrane has been involved for over 25 of them.

“With the continuous support of the Navy League of Canada, Canadian National Defense, and the people of our community, we will continue to do so for many years to come,” said Cochrane.

The cadets meet at the Cornwall Armoury on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
