Emergency crews congregate outside a Marlborough Street home, the scene of a Tuesday evening fire.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Neighbours living around a Marlborough Street home that was engulfed in a Tuesday evening fire said the acrid smoke that filled the neighbourhood was nearly unbearable.

Rubberneckers and neighbours spilled onto Marlborough Tuesday after a single family home was filled with thick black smoke.

There were few flames visible from the exterior but many said there was no doubt some serious damage was created inside.

"I saw the whole thing," said neighbour Steve Rutherford. "There was smoke flowing out of the whole place."

Cornwall police had a section of Marlborough blocked off, and several fire trucks were parked outside the home near the corner of First Street East.

A shirtless man, who admitted it was his home, declined to comment on the fire.

"I was in the back having a coffee and I could smell the smoke and thought it was a barbecue or something," said Pauline Cornett. "I came around the corner and you could really smell the rubber."

By 8 p.m. the fire was largely extinguished.

Cornwall police Sgt. Scott Coulter was unable to say if anyone had been hurt as a result of the fire.

The incident is still under investigation. More to come.
