CORNWALL, Ontario – The city’s only designated driver service led by volunteers has been forced to pump its brakes.
Ray Eady, past chair, announced that the safe alternative to drinking and driving in December has been cancelled.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that after three successful years, Operation Red Nose Cornwall will not be in operation this coming holiday season,” said Eady, vice-president of the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall.
The Ontario Safety League and Operation Red Nose from Quebec (where this program is based) have not renewed their contract with each other.
“Unfortunately, without the financial support of the league, the cost of providing insurance for both volunteers, and patrons alike is unaffordable,” said Eady.
In 2013, over 115 volunteers braved snowstorms in the late of hours of the night to drive people home in Cornwall, St. Andrew’s West, Lancaster, Ingleside, Summerstown, Martintown, and Long Sault.
The club is still working to get this program back for the 2015 holiday season and are actively seeking a new partnership to help revive it.
