CORNWALL, Ontario – Children aged six to 14 will fill Pitt Street next month for a huge outdoor hockey tournament.
As part of downtown celebrations focusing on the annual Santa Claus Parade, the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall is once again organizing a three-on-three hockey tournament to take place on what is normally a busy city street.
Pitt, from First to Third streets, will be shuttered Nov. 15 and dozens of local young people are invited to submit a team to take part in the tournament.
Following last year’s success, organizers are creating divisions this year to allow for children to compete against teams in their own age group. Much like minor hockey, children will face off against each other in six-eight, nine-10, 11-12 and 13-14 divisions.
“Because it’s a free event, a lot of kids who can’t afford to play organized sports will be able to participate,” said Santa’s Street Hockey Challenge co-chair Robin McIntosh.
His sentiments were echoed by counterpart Jeff McCullough.
“It’s amazing to see the sponsorships this year. Within 24 hours all of the sponsors from last year returned, and there are new ones on board.”
The event raised $1,500 for charity last year. McIntosh said this year a similar donation will be made to the local Children’s Christmas Fund.
