CORNWALL, Ontario –  The Township of South Glengarry has finalized the purchase of a 0.86 acre property in Glen Walter for a new fire hall.

The new fire hall will have direct road access to County Road 2 from the  site, located near the intersection of Bray Street and Street ‘A’.

“With the acquisition of this property, council is looking forward to seeing the Glen Walter fire hall project move forward,” said Mayor Ian McLeod. “The site is ideally located to best serve the residents of Glen Walter and the surrounding area.”

Construction of the new fire hall is expected to commence in the spring of 2015.

“As a member of the South Glengarry Fire Service and a resident of this Township, I am very pleased with this recent land acquisition,” said Fire Chief Vic Leroux, “Acquiring this land will allow the fire department to reduce their emergency response times, in a growing community of our township. This is just another positive step towards building a new fire hall and servicing the needs of the Glen Walter community.”

The next step will be to determine whether or not the facility will be a stand-alone fire hall or a building that houses a fire hall and one or more other community needs like a multi-purpose space. Township staff will soon be hosting a community input session to capture the opinions of local residents in this regard.
