CORNWALL, Ontario – The company demolishing the Seaway International Bridge forked over hundreds of dollars in repairs after a Cornwall woman’s car was dinged by falling debris.
Julie Lebrun’s brand new Kia Optima was hit by falling debris, perhaps a piece of cement, while she was driving on Second Street West a few weeks ago. The result was $1,200 in body work that needed to be done to fix the massive dent in the roof and damage to the windsheild.
She was also compensated for the $450 it cost for her to rent a car while her Optima was repaired.
“They were taking a part of the road off the bridge and they only had a black net with holes in (it) to catch what can possibly fall,” she said in an interview. “I was thinking holy crap what was that? What just happened? I thought something hit my windshield but it did not. Instead it made a dent on the roof of my car near the windshield with two huge scratches.”
Lebrun said after contacting her insurance company she called Demo Plus, the firm demolishing the bridge. Steven MacDonald, owner of Demo Plus, took responsibility for the damage, she said.
“He was so nice and he took full responsibility and he apologized to me in person and I had no problem,” said Lebrun.
MacDonald could not be reached for comment.
The intersection at Second Street West and Brookdale Avenue had been partially closed for several days to keep vehicles away from demolition work that was taking place directly overhead.
The intersection was reopened Wednesday at around noon.
