CORNWALL, Ontario – Canada World Youth volunteers will lead a Women’s Safety Audit around Montreal Road to expose risks and make recommendations to local officials on ways to improve security for every woman who walks the area.

Jillian Reed, of CWY, is organizing the event with support from Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) for Women of S.D.G.& A. The 22-year-old from London, Ont. was assigned to the non-profit for her volunteer placement as part of the exchange program that is in Cornwall for two months.

The Women’s Safety Audit walk will take place on December 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. in areas around Montreal Road between Marlborough and St. Felix streets.

All community members are invited to attend.

“We will be walking through the community and identifying areas and factors that are negatively affecting women’s safety,” said Reed.

“Then, we will create a report that we hope will continue the process of making the area a safe and usable space for women of the community.”

CWY volunteers, SASS staff, and supporters will be meeting in front of Uncle Brian Tattoos at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

The audit will assess safety concerns like visibility, lighting, and signage. CWY volunteers use this initiative in every community that they’re placed in.
