CORNWALL, Ontario – The legal landscape in Cornwall is changing with the addition of a new firm adding a foothold to downtown.

Cornwall lawyer Terry Mazerolle is now an associate with Abergel Goldstein and Partners, an Ottawa-based firm that handles high-profile cases involving homicides, terrorism charges and drug offences.

Mazerolle, who for eight years has been swamped operating a small independent operation here, said Wednesday the changeover will become official Feb. 1.

He added the change marks a “big shift” in the local legal landscape and will offer more resources when it comes to representing clients facing weighty police charges.

“(Representing) someone that is facing a murder charge or some kind of project takes up a large amount of resources,” he said. “Some of those clients require a lot of attention.”

Mazerolle’s Pitt Street office will remain, but more support staff will be added – especially during high-profile cases.

He added some of the firm’s legal heavyweights, some of whom have argued before the Supreme Court, will appear on behalf of clients in Cornwall, depending on the circumstances of the charges.

“They’ll be here on a regular basis in Cornwall,” Mazerolle said.
