Missing Akwesasne snowmobiler’s body found

CORNWALL, Ontario – After a week-long search, the second victim of a snowmobile accident on the St. Lawrence River was found on Sunday afternoon.

Kirk Ransom was reported missing on February 15 when he and fellow Akwesasne resident Brandon Sweeting, 26, never returned home from a snowmobile ride.

Sweeting was found on the ice of Lac St. Francois shortly after, though his machine plunged through the ice into the river.

The search began last Sunday afternoon off Hopkins Point Road, which is off Drum Street Road and leads over the Canadian border into Quebec.

After three days, Ransom’s snowmobile was found in the waters near the Salmon River, east of Snye, Que.

Ransom’s family and supporters launched a GoFundMe online fundraising effort recently, “to help offset the costs for the search and recovery efforts to bring Kirk home,” according to the website. A total of $8,455 has been raised.

The website stated it was, “a ride he has taken many times over the years and was very familiar to him.”

The Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department led the search and a Quebec police dive team used underwater cameras to help locate Ransom’s body.
