One dead following house fire in Akwesasne

CORNWALL, Ontario – A person was found dead inside an Akwesasne home that was destroyed by fire Tuesday.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne confirmed the death Tuesday afternoon.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight at a home on Johnson Road in St. Regis, Que. and was battled by Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.

Thick billowy smoke was found by firefighters when they arrived at the scene.

The deceased is believed to be the homeowner.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service requested assistance of the Surete de’ Quebec Ident and Arson Investigations in the case.

The cause of the fire to the residence in unknown and the identity of the person killed has not been released.

It’s been a trying time for Akwesasne in recent days. Just last week two Akwesasne men were killed when their snowmobiles plunged through the ice of a waterway in the region.
