CORNWALL, Ontario – A sweet tradition continues for the Rotary Club of Cornwall.

Service club members will be flipping flapjacks and frying sausages at St. John’s Presbyterian Church starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 28 to help raise funds to assist their community projects.

The Rotary Club of Cornwall’s pancake breakfast and silent auction is a longstanding “local tradition” that draws roughly 500 hungry supporters.

“It’s one of our ‘fun’ fundraisers because we interact with so many people and raise awareness about Rotary in such a short amount of time,” said club president and seven-year member Mike Aho.

For $5, everyone is welcome to enjoy a hearty helping of Rotary’s famous fluffy pancakes, and bid on a variety of auction items. The event wraps up at noon.

The breakfast is one the club’s three major annual fundraisers, including Rose Day on June 13 and a Christmas ham sale.

Rotary supports several area non-profit agencies, including the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG, Maison Baldwin House, and most recently a $2,000 donation for a local literacy project.

Aho was pleased to announce that the club just finished paying off the $50,000 it committed over a three-year period to the development of the Benson Centre.

“Being a Rotarian is a wonderful way to give back to the community,” he said. “We currently have 21 members and are always seeking new membership.”

According to Aho, construction of the club’s $65,000 outdoor gym project, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise, could begin within the next few months. (Read our previous coverage here.)

“We’re hoping the gym goes up this summer,” he said.

The pancake breakfast will also feature live entertainment by Akwesasne’s TJ Jackson performing as Elvis and a local magician.
