CORNWALL, Ontario – Kevin Sauve was jolted from his bed Friday morning by a neighbour pounding on his front – because a fire was raging in a nearby apartment.
The fire on Sydney Street, between First and Second Streets, was confined to one of five apartments in a large multiplex, Sauve said.
“With all the pounding it was pretty scary,” Sauve said. “When I answered the door they were gone. They were all outside.”
Cornwall police closed the street for a time while city firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Sauve said the incident was concluded in about 20 minutes.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, Sauve heard that a sleep apnea machine in one of the apartments may have contributed to the fire.
Sydney Street has since reopened to traffic. No injuries were reported in the fire.
