Tugboat salvage plan being reviewed by authorities

A tugboat lies partially submerged

CORNWALL, Ontario – A salvage plan for a pair of tugboats capsized in the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall has been received and is being reviewed by authorities.

The Lac Manitoba and LCM131 remain capsized near Lamoureux Park.

“Contracted divers have inspected the vessels, and a salvage plan by the owners has been received and is being reviewed by appropriate authorities, including Transport Canada,” Canada Coast Guard spokesperson Carol Launderville said. “The owners of the vessels are also on-site.

“There has been very little pollution resulting from the wrecks, so far.”

But the coast guard is said to be investigating a new report of a few droplets of oil on the water in the area.

“The Coast Guard’s Environmental Response personnel and the certified spill response agency…remain on-scene and have deployed containment boom and sorbent pads to deflect and collect any pollution floating on the surface,” Launderville said.
