CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall-Seaway Valley Growers Farmer’s Market is celebrating decades of community support with a customer appreciation day this Saturday (August 1).

Longtime vendor Marc Brunet hopes to garner some attention for the fresh produce that’s now in season, including sweet corn, beans, beets, cucumbers, Swiss chard, kale, and onions. To name a few.

“Just about everything is in full swing,” he said.

Brunet’s managed the Cornwall farmers’ market, located in The Brick’s parking lot (1525 Pitt Street), since the inception of the Seaway Valley Fruit & Growers Association in 1983.

The one-stop-shop for all things fresh runs Saturdays and Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to noon.

To mark customer appreciation day, the farmer’s market will hold a raffle for a basket of assorted goodies at 11 a.m. There is no charge to enter a ballot. Various vendors will also be offering discounts and samples, as shoppers enjoy live entertainment.

“This is our way to thank the community for supporting local growers,” said Brunet.

He says the variety of food vendors offer a local, fresh and social experience that many of the regulars keep coming back for. In addition to fruits and veggies, baked goods, preserves and jams, Mexican food fare, and authentic Jamaican cuisine can be found.

Moose Creek’s Wild Rose Organic Farm owner/operator Diana Freeman, a seventh generation farmer, will be at the market with a wide selection of seasonal produce, herbs, and organic handsoap made with rosehip oil.

“As farmers, we really appreciate people taking time to support us, and for those who are not aware of the market, customer appreciation day is an opportunity for them to buy local and meet the vendors,” said Freeman. “We love answering questions and talking about gardening.”

Other vendors include Avonmore Berry Farm, Whaley’s Acres – Pasture Perfect Pork (Ingleside), Brenda’s Veggies (Lunenburg), Ingleside Tomatoes, Linda’s Preserves, Jambel, and Swiss Farmer Bakery (Moose Creek).

The Cornwall-Seaway Valley Growers Farmer’s Market has been at its current location since 2003. Before that it called City Limits home for 20 years.
