CORNWALL, Ontario – A collection of more than half a dozen local agencies are banding together to promote the rights of children.
During a small ceremony Thursday morning the groups got together to kick off a promotional campaign to draw awareness to National Day of the Child, which takes place Nov. 20.
“One of our pillars is all that kids can be,” said Sherry Davis, program and event co-ordinator for the local United Way, the lead agency in drawing support for National Day of the Child. “We’re really all about promoting the day.”
A slew of activities will take place throughout the region on the day, including a performance by Junkyard Symphony in Williamstown and a promotional campaign to draw awareness to the rights of young people.
“The SD and G County Library is a big (help) because they have 18 branches throughout SD and G,” said Davis.
Other community partners who are helping to spread the word of National Day of the Child include Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cornwall and SD and G, Cornwall police, the Children’s Treatment Centre, Laurencrest, Eastern Ontario Health Unit, the City of Cornwall, Koala Place and St. Matthew’s Learning Centre.
National Child Day is celebrated on Nov. 20 each year. National Child Day has been celebrated across Canada since 1993 to commemorate the United Nations’ adoption of two documents centred on children’s rights: the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child on Nov. 20, 1959, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on Nov. 20, 1989.
