CORNWALL/SD&G – MP Guy Lauzon’s office is offering free assistance to help residents claim the disability tax credit.

The Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MP’s constituency office at 621 Pitt Street in Cornwall dedicates a full-time staff member, Sue Dingwall, to assist residents with the ABCs of the DTC.

Thee DTC is intended to give a financial break to taxpayers with severe and prolonged mental and/or physical impairments.

“We want to make sure that they get the tax refunds they deserve to support their families and their needs,” said Lauzon.

The service provides an alternative to third-party consultants that charge as much as 30 per cent to help people claim the tax credit.

“These so-called consultants rip-off people with disabilities for thousands of dollars – when our staff offers the service for free and with no commission,” said Lauzon. “I will continue to push this issue in the House of Commons to restrict their ability to prey on the vulnerable in our country.”

He says his staff will send all paperwork to their family physician or specialist and send all paperwork and documents to the CRA at no cost.

“Being eligible for the DTC can open the door to other federal, provincial, or territorial programs, such as the registered disability savings plan, the working income tax benefit, and the child disability benefit,” said Lauzon.

Contact Lauzon’s office toll-free at 1-888-805-2513 to set up an appointment to discuss eligibility.

According to the Canada Revenue Agency: This year, Canadians claiming the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) will be able to file their T1 return online regardless of whether or not their Form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate has been submitted to the CRA for that tax year.
