CORNWALL, Ontario – A $350,000 splash pad for Riverdale Park could be built this summer.
City councillors want to borrow the money over five years, at $75,000 per annum, to fulfill a promise to residents when the pool at the popular park was removed a couple of years ago. The annual figure includes the cost of borrowing the money.
“They felt a promise was made in good faith…and is now being ignored,” said Coun. Justin Towndale, who has heard from residents who want some kind of water-based amenity returned to Riverdale Park. “This is something for the kids in the neighbourhood.”
Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said the city should move ahead with the construction of the splash pad.
“A new council has not followed through. And I do believe that based on the fact that it was promised…that park is one of the most utilized parks in the city of Cornwall,” he said. “I think it’s a good use of public funds.
“If a promise was made we should live up to that promise.”
CAO Norm Levac said the splash pad construction would begin this year, but it could take until well into the summer before it is ready for use – if at all. Children looking to enjoy the splash pad might have to wait until the summer of 2017 to enjoy the new attraction.
The budget committee decision will require the assent of the entire city council at a special meeting before it is approved.
