CORNWALL, Ont. – Six teams, 12 hours, 12,000 cans – Canstruction is not your typical food drive.
The inaugural ‘Canstruction‘ Cornwall competition is underway at the Benson Centre.
“We’re really excited to bring this international event to Cornwall,” said Kendra Smith, fund development and communications officer at Agape Centre and member of the Canstruction Cornwall planning committee.
Organizers said over 12,000 cans and non-perishable food items will be donated to the food bank/community kitchen/thrift store as a result of the event, in addition to sponsorship support and donations from people’s choice award voting.
The Agape centre provides food and clothing to more than 1,000 people each month.
The unique fundraiser challenges teams to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food, non-perishable food items, and a few props to complete the look. At the close of the competition all of the food is donated to the Agape.
“It’s a fun way to raise some food for the shelves at a time of year when typically donations run low,” said Smith.
Teams will be building through the night to have their structures – which can be as large as 10 ft x 10 ft x 10 ft – ready for judging Saturday morning.
The colossal art pieces will be on public display for two weeks, beginning 8:00 a.m. on Saturday (April 16) through to April 30.
Six groups have committed to the challenge: Bourgon Construction, Cornwall Kinsmen Club, Professional Engineers Ontario, Rotary Interact Club, Agape Centre, and WSP/Architecture49 Inc.
Teams are contending for a title in five categories: Structural Ingenuity, Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Jurors Favorite, and People’s Choice. The local winners will move on to the international competition.
Community partners include Seaway Express, Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer, National Grocer, and No Frills.
