CORNWALL, Ontario – Rachel’s Kids is opening a new community building to help families in need in our region.

The agency has secured space at 850 Boundary Road to open a resource centre for children with disabilities and families in need throughout our area.

A sensory room is being created to provide a space for children who suffer from sensory-processing disorders and autism-spectrum disorders. The hope is the room will foster their sensory development, enhance their co-ordination and provide the opportunity for self-regulation.

In addition, a community room will be created that will be designed to help families by giving them access to services that they may not be able to have at home.

“We would have a computer for families to use, a printer/copier, tables and chairs, and resource pamphlets informing them on services our community offers, as well as a small library, ” said Kim Lauzo, executive director of Rachel’s Kids.

The agency was founded by Dr. Rachel Navaneelan, a local dentist.

Rachel’s Kids is in the midst of moving in to the new location. It is anticipated it will be ready to service area families later this summer.

“While we may not be able to change anything about the amount of poverty that is present in our community, we can change the quality and type of programming that is offered to the children and families that are struggling to provide for their (children),” said Lauzon. “The need in our community is present and we want to give the children who had a less fortunate start a leg up on starting their educational journey.”

This Saturday will mark the 2016 Rachel’s Kids Garden Party, which runs from noon to 5 p.m. at the Ramada Inn.

Last year the garden party raised $141,000.

Tickets for the garden party can be purchased by call 613-933-3946.
