Cornwall-area family rising from the ashes of fire that took their home

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall-area family that lost everything in a tragic fire last week is gaining strength through the support of their adoptive brethren.

Tommy and France MacKay have been bowled over by the support of the Cornwall Community Police Service. Tommy has been an officer with the force for a number of years and his colleagues are hosting a barbecue to benefit the family Friday.

“It’s overwhelming – the response,” said Tommy. “Cornwall as a community historically has always come together.

“The response at the police station has been unbelievable. As a young man I held down three jobs at one time to support my wife and kids. This is humbling. I have no problems asking for my wife and kids, I have a hard time more for myself.”

Last Friday fire ripped through the family’s Glen Walter home, reducing much of it to cinders. The house and its contents have been completely lost.

The MacKays, including children Austin, Katelyne, Evan and granddaughter Abigail, are currently staying in a two-bedroom apartment while they await word on renting another home.

Tommy said it’s unclear when they will have concrete plans set for a future home.

“Everything is gone,” he said. “We don’t have confirmation on what is going to happen yet. Indications are (the home will be demolished) and they will assess the foundation and go from there.”

It could take as long as a year to have a home completely rebuilt on the property.

The benefit barbecue will take place Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cornwall police station. Burgers and refreshments will be served on a donation basis with proceeds going directly to the family.
