CORNWALL, Ontario – There were reports from around Ontario on Wednesday of individuals receiving scam emails concerning unpaid traffic tickets.

Const. Dan Cloutier of the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) stated to the Seaway News that the CCPS had received 15-20 calls from local residents claiming they had received this scam.

“They (the scammers) are sending out notifications that individuals have been ticketed and asks them to click on a link,” said Cloutier. “I didn’t follow that link because I assumed it would be spam.”

Other areas of Ontario such as Kawartha Lakes have also received reports about this scam.

Traffic violations listed in the ticket usually seems to be “negligent driving” and the infraction is for hundreds of dollars.

At the bottom of the email there is a link called “Photo Proof” followed by a serial number. This is the potentially harmful link that should not be clicked.

The CCPS will investigate any reports of individuals in the Cornwall area who are scammed in this case or any other case of fraud.

The CCPS would also like to remind readers that legal summons are always either delivered or sent through the post.

They recommend that citizens exercise caution and not follow any suspicious links.
