Thanks to the media the response to this project has been overwhelming. All our stores are collecting used eye glasses and many people have called or emailed us to volunteer. We have volunteers for both here and to go with us to Haiti. Our helphaitisee.com website will be up by the end of this week and an ongoing update will be posted to the site regularly. UNICEF will have a direct link on our website and anyone wishing to donate money can follow the link. As mentioned before, our suppliers are stepping up and donating frames and lenses. We are continuing to ask government agencies for help with the transportation and safe accommodation. Unfortunately, their response has been less then helpful. Some departments are telling us to contact others. Basically “it’s not my department” response while others tell us that they think what we are doing is wonderful but they can’t help in any way.
Because of this lack of support from our government, Mr. Kechichian has contacted some “private security firms” and has been told that they can get us in and out of Haiti, via the Dominican Republic, going in the back door. If that is the only way that we can complete this mission, then that is what will have to happen. We are more determined than ever to complete this mission. Our advertising will continue and shortly we will be on the buses. We hope that people will continue to show their support by donating their used eyeglasses.
We will keep you updated.
