PASTOR'S PERSPECTIVE: Stayed upon Jehovah

John Scorgie

You may or may not know the hymn entitled, “Like a River Glorious.”  The refrain goes like this: “Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blessed, Finding as He promised, perfect peace and rest.”  It is truly wonderful to experience first-hand the peace of God in the tough circumstances of life.  Sometimes we forfeit that blessed, precious peace because we have chosen, strangely enough, fear, worry, anger or depression.  That precious peace can be the wonderful possession of the genuine follower of Christ if s/he will simply relinquish his/her hold on the other crippling responses to life and take by simple faith God’s special, divine provision.  It is only by knowing His peace as the umpire in the citadel of your heart that you can genuinely worship and pray and witness and serve the Lord.  It is only by allowing the calming, serene presence of the Lord God to hold sway that we can face life head on and live it victoriously and confidently.  My friend, is there a storm at sea in your own soul today?  If you are a child of God, by sincere faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, you can legitimately lay claim to His great gift of peace.  May the hymn, mentioned above, describe your own life, “stayed upon Jehovah!”

I think we need to go beyond publishers' motives and ask what were the reasons why Bible translators used the word LORD instead of Jehovah. The tradition of substituting the word LORD for the name of God (YHWH) is not something that Christians started. For thousands of years, Jews have been refraining from speaking the name of God out of great reverence for His name, which is holy (Psalm 111:9). Instead, when reading the Divine name out loud, they would say "Adonai" instead, which means "Lord". Bibles today reflect that tradition. One reason I can think that translators removed Jehovah from modern versions of the Bible is because it is not really the correct pronunciation. A more accurate rendering would be Yahweh, which is what you will find in one recent version called the World English Bible, where it occurs 5795 times. Whether Christians have LORD or Jehovah or Yahweh in their Bibles, they do not "refuse" or "disdain" to use God's name in song. The hymn, "Like a River Glorious" is just one of many examples of this. Two others hymns I can think of are, "Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah" and "The God of Abraham Praise". There is also the Hillsong, "Yahweh".

Jehovah isn't God's true name, so it can't be 'restored' to the Bible text. Strong's Concordance tells us this name (Jehovah) is made up. The Catholic Encyclopedia and Judiaism 101 (on line) both agree that a German copiest was putting YHWH in his mms and then Adonai underneath the letters. He asked the Pope if he could place the vowels within the consonants to make a name. The Pope said fine! Thus the invention of His new name. His self given name is found at Exodus 3:14, and is not Jehovah!(see the Hebrew translation). *Jehovah's* Witnesses the name of an adventist Millerite spin off sect. It's the Catholic Pope who 'invented' the Jehovah name and the Watchtower should give him credit for it.

Yet those same bible versions provide the names and qualifications of the translators unlike the New World Translation. Former governing body member Franz told the world that of the 5 persons responsible for the NWT only one had just a little Greek training. Less than two years. The NWT is filled with dishonesty. Do you really believe that Jesus created all (other) things or all things? Jesus was God or Jesus was a god? I would suggest that your NWT be renamed The Book of Watchtower, kind of like the Book of Mormon. Both groups agenda is to make God say things they want him to say.

The issue with Jehovah's Witnesses is that their entire doctrinal superstructure rest squarely on the 'invisible' second coming of Jesus October 1914.There is no way they can evade this patently false dogma. Jesus specifically forewarned about false prophets who would say,"look he is here in the wilderness,or see he is here in the Temple".Jesus further warned to "not go after them". (Matthew 7:15)

Since you use "Jehovah" in your article, perhaps you can explain why so many, in fact, by far the great majority of Christians refuse to use God's personal name as used in the Scriptures about 7,000 times? Whenever I have asked this, I have always receieved vague, mealy-mouthed responses. But I sincerely would like to know why Christians distain the name "Jehovah" as it is used in the earliest manuscripts (Yod He Vau He)? They truly do distain the name. It goes beyound a personal preference, way beyound. Christians have had it deliberately stripped from their Bibles in new editions, especially after the 1940s both in English versions and many other language versions. This was a deliberate act by Bible publishers to alter their Bibles. Why? Many translations had the name Jehovah, then the same version when it was updated suddenly removed it. Why?
