When people feel cornered into verifying their verbal statements, sometimes they will resort to this claim, “honest to God…” They are calling upon God as their greatest witness to what they have just said. But shouldn’t everything we say be true and honest before God and people? Why does God demand honesty from us? Why does God require truthfulness in who we are and what we say? Let me share a few good reasons with you. First of all, we cannot practice dishonesty and truly love and reverence God at the same time. Secondly, we cannot practice dishonesty and sincerely love our neighbours as ourselves. Thirdly, we cannot practice dishonesty and expect to be and appear to be credible before others in our words and actions. Fourthly, we cannot practice dishonesty and truly expect God to direct our lives into His perfect will. Fifthly, we cannot practice dishonesty and assume, at the same time, that God will bless and empower us. Sixthly, we cannot practice dishonesty and expect to go on our merry way with a clear conscience and a bold confidence. I would challenge you to be “honest to God” and live a life of integrity before both the Lord and your fellow human beings!
