Mary Spencer of Windsor, Ont., the current World and Pan American champion, won Wednesday on the first day of the women's elite boxing continental championships being held at the Nav Centre in Cornwall.
She defeated Mexico's Alma Rivera by a score of 12-2, and was the only Canadian to win on the day.
The continental championships acts as a qualifying tournament for the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateure women's world championships in Qinhuangdao, China, which starts May 9.
That tournament, in turn, will serve as a qualifier for the London Olympics.
The 2012 Games will mark the first time female boxers will compete at an Olympics.
There were a total of ten bouts on the opening night of the tournament.
Boxing at the event takes place every evening, from tonight until Saturday, at 7 p.m.
