A national broomball championship is coming to Cornwall.
The National Juvenile Broomball Championships will be taking place next spring at the Benson Centre in Cornwall.
City council was briefed on the tournament at Monday's council meeting, and administrators are compliling a report on how the city can help offset some of the costs associated with hosting the championship.
The city has been asked by tournament organizers to reduce the rental amount of the ice at the Benson Centre to the "youth" designation for the balance of the event, as opposed to "adult/prime time." The reduction, if it is approved by council, could save organizers about $4,000.
City councillors have suggested that more should be done to help increase broomball's profile in Cornwall, given the strong following the sport used to have in the city.
As many as 400 young people are expected to take part in the event, which runs from April 2 to 7.
The organizing committee must raise $20,000 to host the event, which has been hosted in larger cities in the past, including Montreal.
