CORNWALL, Ontario – Developing homegrown talent early is the new game plan for keeping lacrosse at its best in the city.

The Cornwall Minor Lacrosse Association (CMLA) is inviting local youth to their winter skills program starting on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

The Benson Centre's fieldhouse will be the stomping ground for children 12 and under interested in the game.

Terry Turcotte, CMLA president, said the program is designed for newcomers and lacrosse players who want to fine tune their skills.

"Lacrosse is a great off-season sport for hockey players," he said. "This year we joined forces with Caveman Strong."

The CMLA's new athletic partnership will help the association teach game fundamentals in a more active setting. A lacrosse-themed 'boot camp' will combine basic training with a series of strategic drills and warm-up stations.

Kaleb Malyon, 10, and his brother, Samuel Malyon, 7, play for the Cornwall Celtics lacrosse team at different levels. For them the quick action and momentum in every game is worth coming back for each season.

"My favourite part is the intensity," said Kaleb.

Turcotte considers the fieldhouse a perfect location since most of the CMLA players and Cornwall Celtics already play hockey at the Benson Centre. But sometimes location just isn't enough.

Last year, the CMLA took a small dip in registration with only 200 players signing up. He chalked it up to the full contact nature of the sport and the overwhelming amount of sports options readily available for local youth.

"It's full contact, and some parents have a hard time with that, but it's a controlled environment that's heavily supervised," said Turcotte. "They learn discipline for full body contact sports."

The program, which runs until April 9, gives four chances to bring a friend for free during the 'Bring a Buddy Day' on Feb. 19 and 26, and March 5 and 12. Early registration takes place on Jan. 22 and 29 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Benson Centre.
