CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall's stable of Olympic athletes could find another addition in that of thoroughbred weightlifter Kelly McGillis.

McGillis, 17, captured gold at the Canadian Junior Weightlifting Championships in Scarborough and will compete later this year at the Pan-Am weightlifting championships in Toronto.

In Scarborough McGillis had a total lift of 176 kgs, which included an 83 kg snatch to go along with a 93 kg clean-and-jerk.

It was only July of 2011 when the Cornwall teen decided to try the sport of weightlifting to see what might happen.

Since then she's had a slew of solid finishes, including the Pan American Youth (17-and-under) Championship in December in Cancun, where she finished fifth in the girls' +69 kg weight category.

She also qualified for the Youth World Championships in Slovakia in September 2012.

More to come.
