CORNWALL, Ontario - Disco is far from dead for the Seaway Roller Derby Girls League (SRDGL) - and if you think otherwise, they plan to prove you wrong.
Join Cornwall's first women's flat-track roller derby team, the Power Dames, at their 2014 Valentine's Roller Disco at the Agora Catholic Centre on Feb. 15 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
"This event helps the league to raise funds for venues, uniforms, and travel," said Amy 'Celtica Whips' Brown-McCormick, Power Dames team captain.
The fun, relaxed family event promotes the league while also attracting new players. All ages are encouraged to strap on some skates and roll with local athletes.
Since August 2011, The Power Dames have gone tooth and nail to carve a permanent place in Cornwall's sport scene, earning respect from Ottawa and Montreal's top players.
Coach Jeff 'Whitesnake' Brown and bench manager Vince 'Vintatorship' Jasiewicz are extremely dedicated to keeping all 22 members of SRDGL in motion.
To ensure the Power Dames dominate their upcoming season, the "Wayne Gretzky of women's roller derby" Georgia W. Tush was called in for boot camp style training. She's the co-captain of the Montreal 'New Skids on the Block' and a two-time member of Team Canada's roller derby team.
"They have come a long way since last year, and it's really exciting that their numbers are higher this season," said Tush, 29. "They're going to have a strong team."
In a few weeks, she will be in France to play their national team and Team England.
Jasiewicz said SRDGL is struggling to find a few good zebras (also known as referees).
"It's being part of the game without the contact," he said.
The Power Dames continue to practice at the Moulinette Hall in the Cornwall campus of St. Lawrence College. To find out exact dates and times, visit http://www.seawayrollerderbygirls.com/.
