CORNWALL, Ontario – A young Cornwall Wildcat is hoping to sink his claws into the gridiron's top national football prep camp in the United States.
Ethan Da Silva, who is just 12, has been invited to compete at Football University's Top Gun, at Dublin Jerome High School in Ohio.
Da Silva is a young defensive end that has played for three seasons with the Cornwall minor Wildcats and will attend Holy Trinity School in the fall.
He will be one of 800 attending the prestigious U.S. camp July 21 to 23.
"I'm looking forward to getting more experience and bringing it back to Cornwall," he said in an interview.
It looks like he'll get his chance, too.
Top Gun is not your typical minor football camp, where parents plunk down money and ship their child off to play.
Da Silva's family had to apply to the prestigious camp and supply all of his stats and numbers to determine "if he would be a good fit," said his mother Jo Ann. "We were just overwhelmed by American football. It's like hockey up here."
Da Silva plays in both spring and fall football leagues locally, where he alternates between work on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Top Gun is the culmination of a 30-camp nationwide U.S. tour gathering elite players from across the country and allowing them to compete and display their abilities together on one stage.
